چکیده
Non-Gaussian imprints on the cosmic microwave background radiation (CBR) sky are within the grasp of current experiments. A clear non-Gaussian signature would be point-like sources. We have examined the nature of possible point sources that were tentatively identified in a recent high frequency CBR experiment with half-degree resolution (Cheng et al. 1994: MSAM). The effects of local foreground sources, including cold dust clouds, radio sources and the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect due to foreground rich clusters are considered, and the effective spectral slopes of these various foreground contaminations are calculated. Radio source emission and the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect are ruled out as the explanation of the possible MSAM sources. Modeles are examined of extremely cold dust clouds which are located in the solar neighborhood, the interstellar medium, the galactic halo or at cosmo-logical distances. We estimate the cloud mass and dust grain parameters, and in particular the grain size distribution, that are required in order to produce a detectable signal in an MSAM-type experiment. It is shown that cold dust clouds can have an important effect on CBR experiments only if the clouds are nearby, and located within a disc scale height of the solar neighborhood. Cold dust emission remains a possible source of far-infrared signal at the level of the detected CBR fluctuations on degree scales, but may be ruled out if the dust emissivity index satisfies α = 1.5 ± 0.5 .

Hamilton-Jacobi theory provides a natural starting point for a covariant description of the gravitational field. Using a spatial gradient expansion, one may solve for the phase of the wavefunction by using a line-integral in su-perspace. Each contour of integration corresponds to a particular choice of time-hypersurface, and each yields the same answer. In this way, one can describe all time ch...

We present a general formalism for computing Cosmic Background Radiation (CBR) and density fluctuations in open models with stiff sources. We decompose both the metric fluctuations and the fluctuations in the stressenergy tensor into scalar, vector and tensor modes. We find analytic Green’s functions for the linearized Einstein equations in the presence of stiff sources and use this formalism t...

After a short history of the Λ-term it is explained why the (effective) cosmological constant is expected to obtain contributions from short-distance-physics, corresponding to an energy scale of at least 100 GeV. The actual tiny value of the cosmological constant in any natural scale of units represents, therefore, one of the deepest mysteries of present day fundamental physics. We also briefly...

Weak gravitational lensing from large-scale structure enhances and reduces the fluxes from extragalactic point sources with an r.m.s. amplitude of order 15%. In cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments, sources exceeding some flux threshold φc are removed, which means that lensing will modulate the brightness map of the remaining unresolved sources. Since this mean brightness is of order 1...

We obtain the BTZ black hole (AdS 3 ×S 3) as a non-dilatonic solution from type 0B string theory. Analyzing the perturbation around this black hole background, we show that the tachyon is not a propagating mode.
